Tanis Jean Sawers was born to parents Harry and Elizabeth Sandgren in Victoria, B.C., on August 19, 1954. She grew up in Victoria until the age of 9, when she moved with her parents to North Vancouver, to a house she lovingly called home for the next 61 years.

Tanis spent many summers exploring her treasured province of B.C. with her dear dad, with whom she had an especially close relationship after the devastating passing of her mother at the tender age of 12.

Harry and Tanis took on life together as a close team through her teen years. At 19, Tanis pursued her interest in science and technology at B.C.I.T., studying nuclear medicine, where she would later teach for many years. She met “her people” in this field—friends who would become like a second family. While practicing in her new field briefly in Calgary, she met her soulmate and lifelong teammate, Dave. Missing the beauty of B.C., they moved back to Vancouver and married on April 9, 1977. Tanis was the proud mother of three sons: Bryan (b. 1982) and twins Greg and Shaun (b. 1984). Needless to say, Tanis did not sleep much between 1982 and 1985. It was all worth it, though, as her sons were the apple of her eye and the deepest part of her heart. She was incredibly proud of each of them.

Tanis was a woman who cultivated the company of many cherished friends. She loved a good party, a good laugh, and always prioritized people and close relationships. Tanis had a passion for travel, gardening, and the beautiful property built by her dad on Pender Island. Most of all, she was a proud matriarch of her beautiful family, including six treasured grandchildren (Luseia, Sadie, Chloe, Harry, Taylor, and Gordon) and her three daughters-in-law (Carley, Jessica, and Julia), whom she welcomed and loved as her own.

Tanis was a warrior and wanted nothing more than to keep living for her precious family and friends. Through every fear and piece of dark news that cancer had returned, she pressed on with bravery and resolve for the people she loved. Tanis did this with the unwavering support of friends and family, especially from her biggest supporter, Dave.

Tanis taught us that love never gives up, and we now know it also never dies. Rest in peace, dear Tanis. We love you forever.

Tanis passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, supported by the exceptional care team at North Shore Hospice. We extend our deepest, heartfelt gratitude to every medical professional who cared for Tanis during her 13-year journey with cancer. In place of flowers, we welcome donations to B.C. Cancer in Tanis' honour.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
