It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our mother, Sollynd Weatherall, on May 15th, 2026, her three daughters by her side.
Sollynd was born on June 26, 1927 in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. She grew up on a farm near Langruth, Manitoba, which she always reminisced about fondly with stories about the kindness of friends and neighbours, farm adventures and a love of life on the prairie.
Sollynd was an independent woman throughout her life. At the young age of 16, she worked to support her mother. Sollynd set and achieved many goals in her young life, attending night school while working full time and improving her status as she went, eventually securing a position at Manitoba Power and the Manitoba Grain Exchange.
In 1948, at the age of 21, she moved to Vancouver at the encouragement of two of her three sisters, which is where she met her husband, John Weatherall. They were married in 1951 and had three daughters, Julie, Jill and Jacquelyn, and later, two grandsons Kourosh and Kamyar. Sollynd was extremely proud of her family including her sons-in-law, Mohsen and Fariborz and family friend, Brad.
Sollynd always enjoyed working and when her youngest daughter entered school, she returned to work at various secretarial positions including the Arts One department at UBC, and as a staff assistant at the Vancouver School Board. In retirement she was no less busy! She was a devoted grandmother and her grandsons always awaited Wednesday, their 'Grandma day' with eager anticipation. She had a different activity every day of the week which included choir, Spanish class, and volunteering at the Kerrisdale Senior's Centre.
Sollynd had a love of music from an early age, spending time at a neighbour's farm whom she lovingly referred to as 'the musical family'. She was a member of the Dunbar United Church choir, sang with the Sweet Adelines and later with the Brock House Music Makers.
Sollynd had an innate wisdom about daily life and matters of the heart, and many sought her advice, (which was only offered if requested!) She lived by some simple edicts which served her well over her almost 99 years. Everything in moderation was the all encompassing rule by which she lived, but others such as Many hands make light work, Let's get this show on the road and Let’s play it by ear, were all part of our family vernacular growing up.
Mom maintained her positive outlook on life and remained independent well into her 90’s until she eventually moved to South Granville Park Lodge in January of 2025. We are grateful for the care she received from the dedicated staff at South Granville Park Lodge.
This prayer, written by Sollynd and found among her papers best sums up our mother’s values and her endless gratitude for all she received throughout her life:
Thank you God for the world we live in, for all its beauty.
I pray for my family - that they will care for each other and understand each other.
Thank you for my life, you have had your angels around me all my life.
I know - guardian angels.
Bless the world and every human. Put love in their hearts so war will end/dissipate.
Bless family, friends and relatives.
Sollynd is survived by her her older sister, Halldora Hampton, three daughters, Julie Ann, Jill Louise (Brad) and Jacquelyn Alex (Fariborz), grandsons, Kourosh and Kamyar and many nieces and nephews.
We are all grateful for the time we have had with our beautiful mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, Sollynd Weatherall. She will continue to live on in our hearts and memories.

Sollynd was a woman of kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength. She lived a long and meaningful life, touching the hearts of everyone who knew her. She cared deeply for her family, valued friendship, and always treated others with respect and compassion.
What I will remember most about Sollynd is her positive outlook on life, her warm smile, and her ability to make people feel welcome and appreciated. She believed in helping others, staying active, continuing to learn, and finding joy in life’s simple moments.
Her love for her family was evident in everything she did, and the values she lived by kindness, gratitude, humility, and understanding
Although she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on through the many lives she touched and the memories she created.
May her memory be a blessing, and may we always remember her with love and respect.
Rest in peace, Sollynd.

Jill, my heart goes out to you and your family. While I didn't know your mom well, I remember her from our school days and the library. She always struck me as an intelligent, independent woman who valued education and took pride in her work. It is so apparent that she was a loving mother who meant the world to all of you. It was also so special that she shared such a close relationship with her grandsons. Thinking of you all and sending my love and heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.
