Martha (Mom) passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at Royal Columbian Hospital in
New Westminster B.C. at the age of 90.
Martha was one of two daughters born to Gabriel Sanchez Garza and Isabel Parreno de
Sanchez, born in Tampico, Tamaulipas Mexico in 1935. Martha lost her mother at a very
young age but had a wonderful childhood growing up with her beloved sister Maria Isabel (Reyna) and first cousins Baby, Coco, Caro, and Sergio. Her early years were spent close to the
family ranch where she developed her love for horses, she affectionately talked about her
favorite named “Azabache.” She met her husband of 48 years, while his ship was at port in
her hometown of Tampico. They moved to Volos Greece and married in 1965, where she
quickly learned the language and culture. Soon after they decided to relocate to Canada,
settling in Burnaby B.C. where she raised her three sons – Nick, Gabe, and George.
Martha’s life was highlighted by her love for travelling the world, music, dancing, and her
dedication to her family. She loved to cook and always welcomed family and friends with
open arms to enjoy a home cooked meal highlighted by her Mexican/Greek family favorite
recipes. Once her sons became less dependent, she started her own daycare sharing her
nurturing ways. She was affectionately known as “Mama Tita” to many, including her
grandsons Devan, Drew, Noah, Eric, Liam, and Declan.
As a founding member of the Mexican Society of Vancouver (1975), she spent many years
helping organize events to educate and celebrate Mexico’s rich culture. It was here that her
family became part of a much larger extended family. Martha was passionate about her
heritage and took immense pride in making it part of her family’s everyday life.
Martha is lovingly missed by her sons Nick (Valerie), Gabe (Kate), George (Jill), grandsons,
godchildren, and all whose lives she touched. Her family will find comfort in the memories
of an amazing life lived.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Residences at Belvedere & Belvedere
Care Centre for their care and support. We are also deeply grateful to family and friends for
their ongoing kindness and love.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday May 29th @ 11am - St. Mary’s Parish 5251 Joyce St.,
Vancouver followed by an Interment of ashes @ 1:30pm – Robinson Memorial Park

Con mucha tristeza me toca despedirme y darle las gracias a una mujer extraordinaria, mi tía Martha, que fue mucho más que eso para mí. Fue una segunda madre, desde que llegué a Canadá con toda mi familia, una guía constante, una fuente infinita de amor, sabiduría y consuelo. Su presencia llenaba cualquier espacio con calidez y ternura, y su ausencia deja un vacío imposible de describir.
Gracias por cada palabra, cada abrazo, cada gesto de cariño que me regalaste. Te llevo en el alma y en cada rincón de mi memoria. Descansa en paz, tía querida. Siempre vivirás en mi corazón.

Martha was such a beautiful soul. Always a smile and kind word. My favourite memory of her was teaching our family how to make homemade tortillas at our cabin on Mabel Lake. I feel honoured to have known her. She will be missed by many. RIP, Martha ❤️
