Marlene (or “Maggie”), passed peacefully at Cavell Gardens on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Mother of Brent Bily (Sheela) of Burlington, Victor Anderson (Karen) of Albany, son-in-law John Baldwin, separated husband Fred Knoflook, sister Terry Ayotte, sisters-in-law, Joy, Aster, and Bev, grandchildren, Teija and Erik Bily and extended family. Her brothers Bill, Cyril and Fred Nobbs, and most recently her dear daughter, Linda, predeceased her.
Born in Dawson Creek, BC, to Olive and Victor Nobbs, she was the second oldest of 5 siblings. She grew up on a farm in Rolla, and worked as a secretary at Imperial Oil where she met and married Chuck Bily. Together they enjoyed golfing and curling and spent twenty years together raising their son, Brent and daughter, Linda in Edmonton and later Calgary. She continued to golf and helped in the community, volunteering for the Cancer Society, Bow River clean-up, and political campaigns. She and Chuck separated in 1985 but remained supportive co-parents.
In 1989, Marlene was happily reunited with Victor Anderson, her child given up for adoption with great sorrow when she was twenty. She was pleased to have Victor take part in many family trips, reunions, and birthday celebrations. She enjoyed spending time with Brent’s children Teija and Erik in Burlington, Ontario.
Years later, Marlene returned to Dawson Creek, volunteering for Canadian Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the South Peace Hospice Palliative Care Society, being recognized for fifteen years of service. She lived an active life with a keen sense of adventure. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling with family and later with Ray Calder as her partner.
After Ray’s passing, she moved to Vancouver to be closer to Linda. Maggie became an active participant at the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club, making many good friends and she volunteered at St. Paul’s Hospital visiting elderly patients. She married Fred Knoflook in 2019.
She enjoyed a full and active lifetime with friends and family and will be remembered by all those who loved her.
According to her wishes, no service was held, however, donations to BC Lung Foundation or St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation will be accepted.
