It is with deep sadness to share that Larry passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He will be remembered for his steadiness, strength, and quiet determination.
Larry moved to Vancouver in 1970 from Hong Kong. He graduated from UBC in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy.
He began his career as a pharmacist and business owner in Pitt Meadows, where he founded Meadows Drug Mart in 1977. Over the years Larry built a thriving business, eventually joining Shoppers Drug Mart in 2003. He had a successful and varied career, through which he exercised his great entrepreneurial spirit. He once owned three drug stores, a veterinary surgical supplies company, and a dance wear company all at the same time. Over time, he unwound his many businesses but kept working as a pharmacist because he had a passion for helping people get healthy and stay healthy. Unfortunately, he had to step away from pharmacy altogether earlier than he expected due to his illness.
In his retirement, Larry rekindled his love of investing and achieved considerable success with this “second” career.
Larry will be remembered in the quiet moments of everyday life, like home-cooked meals, gardens, Chinese medicines, drums, and guitars. He was a steady, warm, and exceptional husband to Helena, a generous, caring, and proud champion of his two daughters, Angie and Adrienne, and sons-in-law, Nate and Mike. He loved being a grandfather to Isla and Duncan, and was so proud of them. He wished he had more time to see all that they would become.
Those that know him understand that more than anything, his family was his deepest love!

We have know Larry for over 50 years. He was one of the first friends we met when we came to Vancouver and we became close over the years.
Larry was larger than life. He had a keen interest in everything and was successful in every endeavour he pursued. When Angie and Adrienne were involved in hip hop, he organized an annual dance show which brought together all the dance schools in the community. He was truly an amazing father.
We admired his intelligence and quick mind. Whenever we were together we invariably got into philosophical discussions. We will miss all these memories of the good times we shared. Larry’s passing is a great loss to us all.

We have been lucky to be a part of the Chan-Hume family since our son Nate married Angie. We have shared the years together watching our family grow. That meant family dinners, dance recitals, birthday parties, soccer games and Christmas feasting. All of those made even more special by being able to share them with Larry.
Larry was always showing us how much he loved us. Food was his showcase with us as well. Whenever there was an opportunity he cooked. Even when he couldn’t enjoy his own creations, he still loved for us to enjoy his passion. There was a lot of love in those dishes.
Many of these occasions took place in his backyard, another passion of his. The gardens and fish pond that he created were amazing.
Larry spent his life nurturing his marriage, family and his many friendships. He filled our lives with many fond memories and will always be remembered often and lovingly.

Larry was my cherished cousin and a wonderful person. I have fond memories of us playing together in Macao at a young age along with my brothers. We reconnected in 1973 when I moved to Vancouver from Montreal. Larry taught me how to make a few dishes so I could fend for myself. Later on, he became very adept at preparing meals and took great delight in showcasing his culinary skills. We drifted in and out of each other’s lives but the bond always remained intact. I am grateful for times spent together these past few years.
Larry will be remembered for his quiet dignity, his sensitivity, his dedication and enormous love for his family. Gone but forever in our hearts.

I have known Larry for about 37 years, since the time we first moved into our home in Coquitlam. Over the years, we shared so many interests together — music, martial arts, Tai Chi, and even Hip Hop dancing. We could talk openly about anything and never run out of topics.
Larry was more than a friend to me. He was the older brother I always wished I had — someone I respected deeply, looked up to, and learned from throughout life. He had warmth, kindness, and a generous heart that touched everyone around him.
When I stopped hearing from Larry some time ago, deep inside I already feared that he had quietly left us. Hearing the news now still brings tears to my eyes. It is hard to imagine that I will not hear his voice or laughter again in this life.
I will always treasure the countless memories and conversations we shared over nearly four decades of friendship. Larry will forever remain in my heart.
Rest peacefully, my brother. Until we meet again.

I consider Larry one of my dearest friends for more than 50 years. I was introduced to him in September, 1975 when I was working for RBC. He became my client with his first drug store in Pitt Meadows, until I left the bank to start my own business in the early 80's. We became close friends and spent a lot of times talking about everything under the sun. We were also both Chinese martial arts enthusiasts, and we took lessons and practised together regularly.
By the late 80's, we both got so busy with our businesses and growing families that we seldom had time to get together anymore. For almost 20 years we had practically lost touch completely. In 2016, through a mutual friend, we rediscovered each other again. By then, Larry had already been diagnosed with cancer, undergone various therapies and was in remission. I could remember fondly every moment that we could spend together in the past 10 years.
Larry was one of the kindest and most responsible husband, father and grandfather that my wife an I knew. He devoted all his times and energy in the last decade of his life, making sure his family would be fully provided for after he was gone. We shall miss him terribly.
Our deepest condolences to Helena, Angie, Adrienne and families. May he R.I.P.

I had the privilege of knowing Larry for about three years, and our friendship began in a simple and unexpected way—through a guitar.
After selling him a hybrid guitar, I followed up to see how he was enjoying it. That small gesture turned into many conversations, and soon we were regularly in touch on WhatsApp. Though our friendship was not long in years, it was rich in connection. We shared music we loved, stories from our teenage days, and even conversations about life and investments.
Larry was open, warm, and genuinely engaging. He spoke with strength and honesty about his journey, including how he fought and overcame cancer during his time in the U.S. I remember being inspired by his resilience and outlook on life.
He was also generous in spirit—at one point even inviting me to visit his beautiful property before it was sold. That invitation spoke volumes about the kind of person he was: welcoming, thoughtful, and eager to share what he had with others.
I will always remember Larry through the music we shared. Those exchanges may seem simple, but they meant a great deal to me. They were moments of connection, joy, and friendship.
Though I wish we had more time, I am grateful for the time we did have. Larry left a lasting impression on me, and I will remember him fondly.
Rest in peace, Larry.

We’ve known Larry and Helena for the longest time, Margaret first met Larry on her first job here working for Dr. Tong which was just next door to where Larry worked. Larry soared to success after moving out to Pitt Meadows and started his very first pharmacy on his own. The many others that followed were built with his determination, hard work and courage.
Over the many years we’ve been friends we’ve vacationed together from California to Las Vegas with our children. It was a cherished friendship, throughout our lives we kept our friendship.
It’s heartbreaking to have to say goodbye but this is life, all lives end, passing is as much a part of life as being born. Unfortunately we can’t have one without the other. As survivors we will soldier on, keeping the memories of our cherished friendship close to our hearts.

I knew Larry for 35+ years. He was hard working and dedicated to his business. He had a clear mind and made a lot of improvements in his career. He had a lot of courage to face his disease. I admired him and wish him rest in peace.

We have known him for a very short time but since the first day we met he has been a good friend , guide and most trustable person to us in the new land . There are only good thoughts and good words from us for such noble person . I personally will miss him a lot and already feel lost thinking now that he has gone forever I am without a strong support .
