Ian Glass was born in Edmonton on October 31, 1963, and passed away in Burnaby on January 10, 2026, at the age of 62. Diagnosed with cancer in 2024, Ian faced his illness with remarkable strength, optimism, and grace. He visited friends and family in Edmonton for a few days after Christmas and remained in good spirits until a few days before passing with unexpected pulmonary complications.
Ian was predeceased by his mother, Myrna, and his grandparents. He is mourned by his partner, Tanya Houghton, their son Adrian, his father William, his brother David (diana brecka), and their son Quinn, his sister Cathy Mercier and her children Israel, Eleanor, and Bethany, his adopted brother Bruce Baker (Karen) and their children Nathan, Gerry, Erich, and Sarah, the Houghton family, and his loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Raised in Edmonton’s Calder area, Ian graduated from Ross Sheppard High School. In addition to piano and guitar lessons, Ian played baritone horn in the Jr. High and High School bands. He sought a future in music, taught piano and guitar at the Jacobs & Morris school of music, and then took the jazz guitar program at Grant MacEwan College. He joined the band Candid Manor and toured Western Canada from Flin Flon to Ft. St. John. After moving to Vancouver, he studied the business end of the music industry as well as performing with several bands from Seattle to Haida Gwaii. For many summers Ian returned to Edmonton to join his mother as a volunteer at the Edmonton Folk Festival. In the past year, he reconnected with longtime musical friends to compile a recording of original songs. He had many musical friends that were a part of his chosen family and was always ready to jam or play a little Queen on the keyboard.
A head injury in a traffic accident interrupted his career but Ian worked for many years at BC Place where he valued the work and the people. Though a rocker at heart, Ian was known as kind, gentle, and encouraging. His belief in God gave him faith and hope.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 am at St. Andrew’s United Church in North Vancouver, 1044 St. Georges Ave., North Vancouver, BC., V7L 3H6. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your charity of choice.

In Loving Memory of Ian
For more than fourteen years, Ian lived with Stan and me, and in that time we came to know him deeply. He had a good heart, and he gathered friends easily wherever he went. Music was one of the great joys we shared together. Ian was a gifted guitar player, and he played his stand‑up piano with the same natural talent. Those days filled with music, laughter, and companionship remain some of the best moments of our life.
Ian had many talents beyond music. He dressed with real style, always putting care into how he presented himself. A many Thanksgiving, he prepared wonderful dinners for us —tasty meals made with love and shared with gratitude. Ian taught us how to use the computer, guiding us with endless patience and kindness. He was an excellent teacher, never rushing, never frustrated, always encouraging.
Ian carried a happiness in him that touched the people around him, which makes it all the more tragic that he left this world so young. My hope is that he is now free of pain, at peace, and surrounded by light.
Ian, we look forward to the day we meet again at the Lord’s table.
Rest in peace.

I am so sorry to friends and family. I knew Ian for a few years back when I lived in Vancouver and hung out with a bunch of musicians. Just so nice. Quiet. Nice. Just plain a nice guy.

A more loving brother who was always there in my moments of need. He had both character and Talent in abundance. This story teller lost his wandering minstrel yet heaven has gained a new band member. Looking forward to seeing you again.

It was truly special to get to see Uncle Ian this Christmas and to give him one last hug. As well, we shared memories about how he taught me to play a song on the organ. He will be missed greatly by family, friends, and all who knew him.

Ian was my cousin and I spent many summers with him and his siblings in Edmonton. He was kind and funny and a very good person. Nothing more you could ask for in a human really.
