George Louis Matkovich

Write a Tribute

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of George Louis Matkovich on May 30, 2026, held safely in the arms of his loving wife, Cindy.

George was predeceased by his father, George Sr. He is survived by his mother, Irene.

George’s absolute greatest joy was his family. He was an incredibly devoted father to his son, Damon (Crystal), and his daughter, Amanda (Gary). He shared an amazingly close and special bond with his four grandchildren, Dylan (Carissa), Dayton, Paige, and Khyla, and was a proud great-grandfather to Atlas.

George also leaves behind many cousins, as well as a lifetime of friends—some of whom he knew since childhood. Oh, the stories they could tell.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM upstairs in the Tiki Room at the Waldorf Hotel. Another family day will be held at Whonnock Lake on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at 5:00pm

George was the single-most, strongest supporting member of my Facebook groupsite, Templeton Secondary School 1974: '59ers to '89ers Friends. I am up all hours of the night through dawn online running that site by combing through members' Fb updates -- and so was George up then, too, combing through the latest online world news updates about democracy's foes. "Good morning, George!" "Good morning, Ruth!" .... George loved Templeton: Our area; our neighbourhoods; our Fair; our children's sports teams; our Hastings Townsite history; our diverse populations of immigrants, First Nations, and descendants.
George attended the recent 60th Anniversary Reunion of '65T and '66T Templeton alumni. Look at the photo of this gathering: George is standing right at the centre, smiling happily. ....I loved George like he was my own brother. He made life feel like a precious gift, "Onward!" He made loyal friendships feel like each of us was someone he treasured. It was George who was, and will always feel in our hearts, a treasured precious gift to each of his family and friends.

My thoughts are with Cindy Lou and family. George was a wonderful Husband and father, adored his grandchildren and it is so amazing he was able to meet and hold his great Grandson Atlas. This love is what gave him the strength and will to warrior through and hang on as long as he did. May you be wrapped in Gods arms, in peace and love.
