Darlene Marie Anne (Gaudet) Hominick, known to all as Rose, passed away peacefully at Langley Memorial Hospital early on the morning of July 7th, 2024.
Born Feb.27, 1958 in Halifax, NS, Rose moved to BC in 1994 with her husband, Eric, to live a full life as a writer, teacher, entrepreneur, musician, lay preacher, counselor, caterer and charity worker.
Her great passions included her faith, her pets, English Afternoon Tea, garage sales, thrifting, cake baking, almost anything Victorian and her beloved Dickens Event Benefits, featuring dramatic readings of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, interspersed by seasonal musical interludes. Over the years she also ran a gift shop cooperative; lay preached, ministered and did chaplaincy and senior care work; taught and ran ESL programs; edited books; won writing awards; catered or sang at weddings and parties; conducted choirs; served on a number of boards; ran charity events; and tutored dyslexic children.
Rose excelled at whatever she turned her hand to, held back only by major health issues that, although they did not stop her, yet slowed her down. Further, she always had time for people and for philanthropic and charitable activities that bespoke her immense heart for the needs of others.
Her honest empathy and caring nature made her a disarming friend and ally; and her faith in Christ and godly wisdom made her a compelling Counsellor and an irresistible and positive influence. Further, Rose’s talent, various interests and work ethic made this Renaissance woman successful in many arenas of life.
Over the years, Rose ran a gift shop cooperative in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia; did both volunteer and chaplaincy work in senior care homes and with children with special needs in the Halifax area; managed a home for expectant teens in Burnaby BC; served on the board of Langley Pos-Abilities Society and strata council of Cheriton Park townhouse complex in Langley BC; conducted Cherubim Choir for 11 years, the youngest level in the esteemed BC Girls Choir family of Choir; founded and conducted Faith Church Kids Choir in Vancouver BC; led seniors and children’s activities at Jericho Ridge community Church; lay preached and ministered in the various churches she attended over the years; taught in, and then managed the largest church based ESL program in the Vancouver Lower Mainland; worked as an Orton Gillingham therapeutic tutor at Vancouver Academy and privately; sang at hundreds of weddings; catered numerous weddings, birthday parties and special occasions; edited several books; won several writing awards; and created and managed a series of Dickens Benefit Events in Halifax, Langley, Richmond, and Vancouver to fund raise for a variety of children’s charities.
Rose is survived by her husband Eric; her sisters Elizabeth Jean (Ian Chamberlain), Denise, and Michelle Patey; and brothers Dennis (Brenda Orlando), Michael (Mary Lou Hartling) and Donald (Noreen Horne). Donations may be made in Rose’s name to the SPCA, Langley Pos-Abilities Society, or the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation
