Barbara Ann Johnston

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Johnston on August 8, 2024. Barbara was predeceased by her parents Elsa and Claude Johnston, brother Bob, and partner Al Smallwood. She is survived by her nephew Chris (Shelley), niece Lisa (Ian), and sister-in-law Joan.

Born in the Pas on August 5, 1932, she went to school in Selkirk. With her best friend Selma, she travelled the world. She had a variety of fascinating jobs, including Playboy in London. Her favorite job was working with Eva Larsson at the Scandinavian Antiques store on West Hastings.

The family would like to express its deep appreciation to John and Marie-Ange for being such good friends to Barbara. We would also like to thank the staff at the Royal Arch Masonic Home who took care of Barbara over the last few years.

Barbara (or 'Barbra' as I incorrectly spelled it as a child) was truly one of a kind. For a period of my life, she was the grandmother I always wished I had. Constantly there to support, and love, and guide, and laugh. She was a great baker. As her neighbour in my youth, we would swim together, she'd tell my father and me stories from her days working in London at Playboy. She even co-starred in a couple of my movies. For years, we'd watch the Oscars together. She was always game. It hurts my heart that we lost touch. It hurts even more to know that she's no longer with us, and I won't get to hear her laugh. Or marvel at her collection of antiques. I hope she has found comfort and love and a good cup of tea wherever her beautiful soul has ended up. I know she believed in heaven, and I hope with all my heart that she was right about it. She will be missed and remembered always. I can't thank her enough for all that she's done for me. What an absolute wonder. A gift of a person to all who knew her.
Love always,
Adam
