Malati (Mali) Hallquist was born in Calcutta, India and immigrated to Canada in the early 1970s. She settled in Richmond for 30 years before moving to Maple Ridge after retirement.
Mali loved Jesus and enjoyed good fellowship at Maple Ridge Alliance Church. Mali also loved and cared for people. She enjoyed meeting new people and sharing life stories. She worked in retail sales, was a homestay host to many international students, and volunteered at the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre just so she could meet and greet and learn from people. She often said that she did not need the internet because she had her “peoplenet”. She also enjoyed travelling the world and nature.
Mali was predeceased by her husband, Leif, in January and her only daughter, Duhita, in 2018. She is survived by her granddaughter, Lanara, and extended family in India and the USA.

I am incredibly saddened to learn of Mali’s passing. Mali was a dear friend of my Mother “Bobbie”, and also became mine. I first met her, when Duhita was only 6 years old, and who shared the same birth day with mine. Mali was a very loving, giving and genuine woman, who adored her daughter Duhita. She also loved her family, her friends, Jesus….. and her beautiful Granddaughter Lanara! I know Mali had the great comfort, trust and support of Duhita’s friend Diana, after loosing both her daughter and husband. If anyone has Diana’s contact information, I would very much like to reach her. My email is smtodd@shaw.ca. I have no doubt that Mali is at Peace, and with her loved ones . May God Bless her Soul! xoxo.

I met Mali in 1993 because I had become friends with her late daughter Duhita. Throughout the 29 years that I was in contact with her, her great love of Jesus and also her great love for people made an impression on me. I got to know her better after Duhita passed away in 2018–she shared her experiences of her life and her love of travel. She told me she had had a good life and was ready to meet Duhita and Jesus in heaven. God bless you Mali and R.I.P.
