Write a Tribute

To honour Lisa’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.

Lisa did not want her friends and family to gather in sorrow; rather, she wanted all those she knew to remember her laughter, amazing sense of humour and compassion - as she was always there to brighten the lives of others.

If you would like to express your condolences or your fond memories of our beautiful friend and colleague, her family would appreciate hearing from you on this memoriam tribute page.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Ovarian Cancer Canada, made on Lisa’s behalf, would be deeply appreciated.  You will have the option to send an eCard to inmemoryofLisa@shaw.ca.

Thank you.

Our condolences to Bruce Brooklyn and Morgan. Cannot imagine the loss that all of you are feeling and going through. B

We remember well when Lisa brought Brooklyn and Morgan to dance at our dance studio.

I personally always remember the beautiful spirit Lisa had and that beautiful infectious cheery attitude all the time that she possessed. Enjoyed our talks and Brooklyn and Morgan were so talented

Rest In Peace our beautiful Lisa

I had the great fortune of meeting Lisa at DFO and getting to know her on our shared daily commute on the West Coast Express as one of the Pitt Meadows "crew". Lisa had a great sense of humour and loved telling stories about travel adventures with her daughters. She was also a wealth of information on travel tips and loved sharing ideas to help others (I'm still using Costco travel for my car rentals!). The same went for work. Lisa was always calm, cool and collected and could always be counted on to offer balanced perspective on the most challenging problems. I will always remember her warm personality and that infectious laugh that had the whole train car wondering about our private jokes. You have my deepest sympathies. Jeff

My deepest condolences to Lisa's family. I first met Lisa when she was a new student working in Finance at DFO. As a young student, her enthusiastic work ethic, love for keeping an upbeat and positive attitude along with her smile and laugh made her such a pleasure in the office. Over the years, Lisa and I crossed paths at DFO working in various assignments. She never changed since her days as a student regardless of how tough work got. I will always remember exchanging a quick laugh with Lisa over the "issue of the day" in hallways, elevators and office events. Lisa will be sorely missed.

It is so hard to comprehend that Lisa is actually, literally gone. I’ve been going through old photo albums from the 80s and 90s; reminiscing and feeling nostalgic. Back in our hometown of Sidney, we met in grade 6 and were friends ever since. I have so many fond memories of all the crazy shenanigans we got up to over the years!

As time went on, our lives didn’t intersect as much, but I still consider Lisa to be one of my oldest and closest friends. She was the OG. The type where you might not talk for ages, but when you did, it was like it was yesterday. The type you could laugh with non-stop till tears rolled down your face. Now they are tears of sadness, because there is something fundamentally wrong with the world when someone like Lisa is taken away.

In this photo… When our hair was big, but Lisa’s smile was bigger! That’s what I will always remember… Rest in peace my friend.

I am deeply saddened by this loss. I still remember the good old days when we were in Justice together. Your laughter always came before you stepped into the office. You brought sunshine to everyone around you. You will be sorely missed. The image of your curly red hair and your signature laughter will remind in our hearts. Deepest condolences to Bruce and your girls. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Dear Bruce, Brooklyn, Morgan and family,

Sending my condolences and love. I can honestly say that the way Lisa talked about all of you showed how very much her world revolved around her family. Despite the challenging role she held at work, her real world was all of you.

Lisa was more than my manager, she was my friend and my mentor. Her super skill was being able to gently tear down barriers, guide us through difficult issues and allow us all to do our very best. I have never worked for a truer leader than Lisa.

Her kindness and caring manner will be missed. She was by my side and checking in all the time while I went through my own battle and I truly cherish the fun we had at work and on a personal level. Her amazing laugh was so honest and heart felt and lifted everyone around her up. She was impactful in so many ways and leaves behind a small piece of her in all of us who knew her.

I wish you love, peace and only good memories.

Lisa, I am deeply saddened by your loss. It is hard to believe you are gone, it is just too soon. If I knew the time I saw you at Waterfront going down the escalator to catch the West Coast Express would be my last, I would have run after you. May your beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Bruce, Brooklyn and Morgan. May God continue to comfort you during this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to Lisa's family and friends...
I conversed with her one-on-one only a handful of times. Most of my interactions with Lisa were in group meetings. I always came away admiring her intellect, confidence and humour. Lisa was an empowering role model. It was an honour to have worked with her.

Sincerely,
Jacqueline

Dear Bruce, Brooklyn, Morgan,

A huge part of my cheer heart is broken9 💔knowing that my cheer-mom-sister-wife is no longer here. Lisa was easy to talk to and one of the first people I met at VAS. I instantly clicked with her because I could tell she was honest, knowledgable and caring. Thru my travels with her on various cheer trips we ventured on together, I discovered how fun-loving and good humoured she was too. She always made an effort to get together even after our daughters "retired" from the sport.
Although our interactions were not frequent thereafter, she left an everlasting impact on me that I'll never forget and the fondest of memories I'll always cherish! CMOG forever, Lisa. Here's a photo of our #Bowentobewild day trip. Thereafter we went to play Bingo in Vancouver and had so many laughs trying to keep up! With love and deepest sympathy. Leanne

Dear Bruce, Morgan and Brooklyn,
My deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to you. I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa on the Westcoast Express, and we would ride in to work together. Lisa always had a smile on her face, and talked highly of her family who she loved so much. We use to talk about the places we wanted to visit when we retire, and I am now sad to learn she never got her wish. It was my absolute pleasure to have met Lisa, and I will miss our chats. Rest In Peace dear Lisa.

Lisa and I met when I was the Librarian at DFO. I have delightful memories that brought smiles to both our faces.
I live in England now but I know there are close friends to support Lisa’s family.

While others stay and leave footprints
in our hearts and we are never the same”
Lisa left footprints in many, many hearts.

Bruce, Morgan and Brooklyn - so incredibly sorry for your loss - As you know Lisa was our rock, voice of reason, and our travel extraordinaire - having a fleet of cars and the most palatial place to hang our hats - we so looked forward to “Worlds week” and had so much fun together - We can’t imagine Worlds without you - but we are incredibly grateful we had the experience together - the trip to the Florida Keys will be one we will never forget! You will forever be in our hearts Larry! Love you forever - Sally, Walt and Terry

To Lisa's family -- I am so so sorry for your loss. I knew Lisa through work at DFO. We sat at the same tables for about 10 years and I always loved seeing her there, and sitting next to her. Her sense of humour, her straightforward nature, and her incredible fingernails were all part of the Lisa package that everyone loved. She loved her daughters so much and shared news of their cheer achievements and other milestones as they grew up.

Lisa -- we haven't been in touch as much since I left DFO but even the occasional check-in was so lovely. I wish we had checked in more often. I had the opportunity to meet one of your staff in a completely different context the other day and we reminisced about your amazingness. You are so well loved and will be missed by all.

Lisa was a special person to so many of us. An amazing and dedicated mom, daughter, wife, friend, colleague, boss and mentor. But for me she was a special person who had my back when I needed it the most offering her encouragement and strength to support me through times of adversity. Lisa had a way of sharing her personal experiences to make points that would show an appreciation for life and a respect for people. I am grateful for Lisa and will miss her and always have her back. Growing old is a privilege denied to many and I am so sorry and sad it was denied to her. My deepest condolences to her family. Always and forever. Lisa M

As you read the tributes to Lisa, you notice words like; laughter, hilarious and happy. The last thing I said to Lisa, three weeks ago, was " Always hilarious ! " I feel that I couldn't have expressed my feelings about Lisa more aptly than those two words. Her personality, her outlook and the way she experienced life ; was ringed with joy. I wake each morning unable to believe my dear friend is no longer on this Earth, always to be missed; never to be forgotten .

Bruce, Brooklynn, Morgan, Lisa’s Mom and other family members: I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I am shocked and deeply saddened by Lisa’s passing but I have also been flooded by so many positive and happy memories. Lisa was like a little sister to me, we grew up together in DFO. We worked and laughed together for over 35 years and have many of the same friends, colleagues and shared experiences. I really did enjoy mocking and teasing her and she took great pleasure in giving it back just as good as she got, if not more. We spent what seems like countless hours in meetings, staff retreats, work Christmas parties (with some horrible group karaoke numbers), group coffees, riding the west coast express, and sharing updates on our families. I feel fortunate to have gotten to know Lisa quite well - she really did care about people, she was positive, she loved and cared for her family and friends, she was genuine and honest, she was witty and funny, she was fair, and she was always dedicated to doing a good job. I could see over the years the very positive impact she had on so many people and why she was so well respected and valued as a friend, boss and colleague. I will greatly miss her laugh and friendship but will fondly remember many fun stories and happy memories.

My thoughts are with Lisa's Family, Friends, and Colleagues as we grieve and celebrate Lisa. Lisa took the time to get to know everyone who crossed her path, sharing stories of family, work experiences, never taking life too seriously, finding the joy or humor, and her unwavering support was unmeasurable. "We have work to do, but remember it is just that(with a laugh)." Her smile, and laugh was so infectious. After spending even a short amount of time talking with Lisa, you left feeling excited, and empowered! It was my honor to have met and worked with/for Lisa!

As I’m thinking of what to write in this tribute, there are truly no words to express how deeply saddened and sorry I am for Lisa’s loss. I started working with Lisa at DFO in 1988 and we have been friends ever since. I have a lot of fond memories with Lisa. From our daily coffees at Tiny’s Diner until they closed down, our trip to Tyax Resort, the laughing contest to sharing memorable life events such as weddings and having kids. Even though we moved to different departments throughout our careers, we always kept in touch.

I was blessed to have a friend like Lisa in my life. She was the most caring, selfless and positive person I have ever met. She had a laughter that was contagious and a heart of gold. She was always there when you needed her. When I look back at messages from Lisa, I’m reminded of how great she was. When I suffered a loss of my own; Lisa was there to support me even though she was dealing with her own health issues. She cared genuinely and will be deeply missed.

Lisa, love you, my friend. May you rest in peace. I will miss you heaps (a word from Lisa’s vocab) and cherish the memories we created.

To Lisa’s family, please accept my deepest condolences. Lisa has been taken far too soon but she will live in your hearts forever. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing you peace and comfort as you navigate through this difficult time.

I had the pleasure of seeing her again when I returned to DFO in 2015. We didn't work together but we always shared a smile. Lisa will be dearly missed.

Lisa and I started with Fisheries and Oceans at around the same time, back in the late 1980s. She was a breath of fresh air, and brought laughter, fun, and caring to the workplace. We worked together closely, and I had an amazing time working with her. She was a beautiful person, and an amazing Mom. Everywhere she went she touched peoples’ lives in such a positive way. She has left us much too early, and I am missing her greatly. I pray for comfort for her friends and family.

My heartfelt condolences to Lisa’s family. I was privileged to work with Lisa over many years at Fisheries and Oceans . She was truly a special person who did not hesitate to offer her help and counsel. She was a great friend with a wicked sense of humour who helped put things into perspective. She knew what truly mattered. She used to joke with me that I was the only person she could call in Ottawa after 2pm Pacific and then, after our chat, tell me it was time for me to call it a day. When I moved back to Newfoundland a couple years before retiring , she wished me well and reminded me to take more time for myself. She cared about others and will be fondly remembered and missed.

Bruce, Booklyn, and Morgan, My family and I send you our deepest sympathy. I got to know Lisa, the lady over the fence with an infectious laugh, as we shared stories every time we saw each other in our back yards. We got to know each other over sunny days and a gardening break. It was always an uplifting moment for me. Gosh I’m going to miss her.

Bruce, Brooklyn & Morgan. I am so sorry for the loss of your wife and Mom. It’s really terribly unfair to lose your rock. She was so proud to be your mom.

I loved her laugh, it was infectious. Her big hair was epic! One time I saw her with three pairs of glasses buried in her curls.
I loved her enthusiasm for cheer, she loved it and was so proud of your both! Emily would not have joined cheer if it wasn’t for her love of the sport which she passed on to us.
She gave me a great piece of advice which I still use today and share with other moms “have sleepovers on Friday nights, the kids are tired from the week, and will go to sleep early”.
I hope in time you will come to see that she wants you to be happy and enjoy your life while she watches over you. <3

Lisa was a dear friend and an amazing mentor to me. We worked together for many years through several different jobs. In every job I have had, I’ve always recalled her advice and have tried to model the way she worked and led her employees. She was kind, strong, confident, funny and so smart. I have such fond memories and we shared many fun times and many great laughs, sometimes laughing til the tears were streaming. She will be so missed.💔

To Bruce, Brooklynn & Morgan,

I was heartbroken to hear about the passing of your beloved wife and mom, Lisa. I’ve known Lisa practically my whole life. With Brooklynn and I being so close growing up, I spent a lot of time with your family especially during my teenaged years. I have so many wonderful memories of Lisa. There wasn’t a time that your mom didn’t make me feel like I was part of your family. I admired her drive and determination when it came to her career. Her sense of humour and laugh was infectious. Her kindness knew no limits, and she always made everyone she met feel special. Your mom impacted my life more than I think I’ll ever know, and I am a better person for having known her. She is gone far too soon, but she will live on in our hearts forever. Sending you my deepest condolences and all of my love while you navigate this difficult time.

Dear Bruce, Brooklyn and Morgan

Our heartfelt condolences go out to you, Aunt Merna, Len and extended family with this very sad loss. I have many happy memories of times spent with Lisa when we were young and our pen pal correspondence. My favorite memory was the week-long adventure I had with her when I travelled on my own for the first time from Banff to Victoria to spend time with her, Lenny, Aunt Merna & Uncle Al. Lisa was always welcoming and was such a kind and caring person who valued family. She was so very proud of her wonderful daughters. Love and hugs to all of you at this very difficult time.

To Bruce and the girls, my deepest condolences. I have known Lisa since she was hired at DFO and I was her first Director. She was always professional, a hard worker who excelled in everything she did. She went back to school to improve herself while continuing to work hard and care for the family she loved so much. She had an infectious personality and was always fun to be around. It was a pleasure to watch her career progress as she moved up in the organization. It is with deep sadness that I reflect on the painful journey she went through with that horrible disease, yet she always managed to maintain a positive outlook and continued to persevere. I know it was the constant support from the family that kept her going. We have lost a wonderful human being on this earth but I know she will be looking down on her family to make sure you are all doing ok. She would want you to remember all the happy memories you have shared together. Her planning for this eventuality is an example of how she did not want people to mourn but to celebrate a beautiful life. My heart does out to all her family and her many dear friends. Terry

One could always tell when Lisa was in attendance at a meeting. No matter the topic, at some point in the meeting her laughter would erupt from behind the boardroom door and make me smile.

Morgan and Brooklyn: your mom was so proud of you and took every opportunity she could to let the world know.

Lisa, I will miss swapping stories about how we lived in the best town around, and I will miss the advice that you so willingly shared. I'm grateful that our lives crossed paths.

Though I didn't have the opportunity to get to know Lisa very well we did end up on a couple of cheer trips together. She was absolutely hilarious! We were in Calgary and she started to tell me about an incident she was having at work. Apparently the crows at her work had started to pester her to the point where she decided that all crows had it in for her. I thought that she was exaggerating until we were standing outside of the gym one evening when a bunch of crows just started making a beeline towards us. Sure enough, they were after her. Her theory was that all crows, everywhere, communicate through some form of crow language and that she was their target. It absolutely cracked me up and now whenever I see several crows together (which is often) I think about Lisa. <3
