Died peacefully at her home in Vancouver  on February 15, 2024 after a life-long struggle with heart disease.  

Mira was born on August 30, 1941 at  Mar’inskaya in the North Caucasus Mountains (then USSR, modern-day Russia). Her father, Abraham Gordon, was an engineer working in metallurgy, and her mother, Frida Gordon, a chemist working in textile industry.  The family lived in Leningrad (now St.Petersburg), but in early June 1941 her mother, expecting a new baby, went with her older daughter Guilel  (3 at the time) to stay for the summer with her in-laws in Zaporizhzhia (now Ukraine).

After Germany attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the civilian population of Zaporizhzhia  was ordered to evacuate to Northern Caucasus. Shortly afterwards  Germany opened the second front in that direction, and the mass evacuation continued, this time to Omsk. Mira was born en route; the family stayed in Mar’yinskaya just long enough for the birth. Meanwhile, Mira’s father in Leningrad had volunteered to join the army. The letter informing him of Mira’s birth reached him at the front lines, but he never got to see her. His letters to his beloved wife  stopped  arriving after 1943. He was considered `missing in action’ near Stalingrad. Mira’s mother Frida with her two young daughters and father-in-law had to stay in Omsk until the end of the war. There, Mira’s first years were marked with extreme cold and hunger.  As soon as the war ended in 1945, the family returned to Leningrad, where Mira’s mother resumed her job of creating dyes at a textile factory.  

During the extremely difficult years in the post-war Leningrad, Mira’s widowed mother, who was essentially self-educated, found the strength to enjoy the little things in life, and encourage her daughters to pursue culture and education. Mira remembered wearing her school uniform (for lack of any other dress) to classical music concerts in the famous Leningrad Philharmonic hall. This, and some piano lessons that her mother managed to arrange, started Mira’s life-long passion for classical music. In her last year of high school, Mira caught strep throat, which progressed to affect the mitral valve in her heart. This changed her life permanently. She was disqualified from applying to the Medical School, which was her dream, as at the time aspiring medical doctors were required to have perfect health. Eventually, she turned to swimming as a means to help her heart compensate the mitral valve damage, and swimming sustained her throughout her difficult life. At age 75, she would still get up at 6am to swim three times a week. 

Mira turned her passion for medicine towards research in microbiology, beginning work as a lab assistant at the Pasteur Institute https://pasteur-network.org/en/members/european-region/institut-pasteur-de-saint-petersbourg/  at age 17.

Despite the silent quotas that were in place at the time in the Soviet Union designed to keep ethnic Jews from universities,  she gained admission to St. Petersburg State University. She continued full-time work while attending the classes in the evenings.  She graduated with a degree in microbiology and continued to work at the Pasteur Institute. A few years later she moved to the newly created Institute for Influenza of the Russian Academy of Sciences, https://www.influenza.spb.ru/en/about_institute/history/  where she worked until her retirement in 2003, in the role of a leading researcher. Mira’s career was full of obstacles coming from the glass ceiling for Jews and for non-members of the Communist Party (which she refused to join on principle). She was not afraid to speak truth to power; her reputation for extreme honesty, knowledge, and attention to detail in her work helped shield her from retribution.  In 1975, Mira defended her Ph.D. thesis `Correlation between the level of humoral immunity and  the incidence of type A influenza’, with some of the  general trends discovered there still proven relevant during the CoVID-19 pandemic. During her career in vaccine research, Mira co-authored over 60 publications in scientific journals, Russian and international. She received multiple recognitions  and awards for creating new influenza vaccines, and was an author of a number of patented inventions in this field. With Mira, the world has lost one of the few old-school experimentalists, whose credo was "A scientist who knows how to do sterile work, could conduct sterile procedures in a public washroom’’. 

After retirement, Mira joined her niece Julia in Canada, living in Toronto for 2 years and then moving to Vancouver in 2006. In her later years, she enjoyed travel, classical music, and cooking (to the delight of her family). Mira is predeceased by her mother Frida (1996), sister Guilel (2000), and survived by several friends in many countries and the family of her niece Julia: husband Halden and daughter Sonam, to whom Mira was a loving grandmother. 

Mira had a boisterous, joyful personality, and a great sense of humour. She always derived true joy from simple things in life — tasty meals, flowers, bird song,  a glimpse of a mountain, music. Her quick philosophical quips and proverbs will remain forever with those who knew her. She was also quick to point out when people strayed from the course of intellectual honesty, and quick to cut ties. Unfortunately, in the last two years of her life she found it challenging to allow herself joy and laughter as she was truly devastated by the news of the war in Ukraine that she followed continuously. She could not fathom that the horror of war, grief  and destruction that had surrounded her birth had returned to the same land, this time coming from the country to which she gave all her working years, passion, and talent. 

Mira is sorely missed by her family and friends.  In her later years, she preferred quiet reflection over gatherings and conversations. In this spirit, and since her  friends are scattered over the world, no memorial service will be held. Those who wish to be with friends to honour her memory, are encouraged to attend The Met: Live in HD https://www.metopera.org/season/in-cinemas/  performance of La Forza di Destino on March 9, in cinemas around the world — a  performance she had planned to attend.

Мира Абрамовна родилась 30 августа 1941 года в Станице Марьинской на Северном Кавказе.  Ее отец, Абрам Львович Гордон, был инженером-металлургом, и работал в Ленинградском Политехническом Институте, а мать, Фрида  Федоровна Гордон, химиком в текстильной промышленности. Семья жила в Ленинграде, но в начале июня 1941 года мать, ожидая рождения ребенка, уехала с трехлетней старшей дочерью Гелей на лето к родителям мужа в Запорожье. Мира родилась в пути из Запорожья в Омск в процессе эвакуации. Её отец ушел добровольцем на фронт, и с 1943 года считался пропавшим без вести под Сталинградом, так и не увидев ее. Фриде Федоровне с двумя маленькими дочерьми и тестем пришлось остаться в Омске до конца войны. Там раннее детство М.А. прошло в тяжелейших условиях, холоде и голоде. Как только в 1945 году закончилась война, семья вернулась в Ленинград, где мать М.A. вернулась на свою работу на фабрике им. Желябова. 

В трудные годы в послевоенном Ленинграде, Фрида Федоровна находила в себе силы водить дочерей на концерты в Филармонию, и это положило начало увлечению М.A. классической музыкой на всю жизнь. В десятом классе Мира заболела ангиной, которая привела к пороку сердца. Это навсегда изменило ее жизнь. Ей не разрешили поступать в Медицинский Институт «по состоянию здоровья».  Она занялась плаванием с целью компенсировать порок сердца, и это удалось. Плавание поддерживало ее на протяжении всей ее жизни:  она и в 75 лет вставала в 6 утра три раза в неделю, чтобы поплавать. 

Мира направила свою страсть к медицине на исследования в области микробиологии, начав работать лаборантом в Институте Пастера в 17 лет и одновременно поступив на биофак Ленинградского Государственного Университета (училась на вечернем отделении, чтобы продолжать работать). Через несколько лет она перешла в только что созданный Институт Гриппа, где проработала до выхода на пенсию в 2003 году в должности ведущего научного сотрудника.  В 1975 году М.A. защитила кандидатскую диссертацию «Корреляция между уровнем гуморального иммунитета и заболеваемостью гриппом типа А»; некоторые обнаруженные там общие тенденции оказались актуальными и во время пандемии CoVID-19. За свою карьеру в области исследований вакцин М.A. стала соавтором более 60 публикаций в научных журналах, российских и международных. Она получила многочисленные признания и награды за создание новых вакцин против гриппа и была автором ряда авторских свидетельств и двукратным лауреатом ВДНХ; ей были присвоены звания Изобретатель СССР и позже, Ветеран Труда. Мир потерял одного из немногих экспериментаторов старой закалки, чьим кредо было: «Ученый, умеющий работать стерильно, может работать стерильно и в туалете».

После выхода на пенсию М.A. переехала в Канаду к своей племяннице Юлии Гордон. Они прожили 2 года в Торонто, а затем переехали в Ванкувер в 2006 году. В последние годы М.А. увлекалась путешествиями, классической музыкой, плаванием, и кулинарией (на радость своей семье). 

Мира Абрамовна всю жизнь была чрезвычайно энергичным, жизнерадостным, и организованным человеком, с прекрасным чувством юмора. Благодаря своим глубоким знаниям в области медицины, она помогла очень многим друзьям и знакомым в тяжелые моменты. Ее точные философские шутки и пословицы навсегда останутся с теми, кто ее знал. Она не терпела никакой неправды и лицемерия, и быстро разрывала связи. К сожалению, в последние два года жизни ей было трудно сохранять свой обычный оптимизм и душевный подъём, поскольку она была по-настоящему угнетена новостями о ситуации в Украине, за которыми постоянно следила. Она не могла постичь, как ужас войны, горе и разрушения, сопровождавшие ее первые дни, могли вернуться на ту же землю, на этот раз придя из страны, которой она отдала все свои трудовые годы, энтузиазм и талант.

Уход такого кристально честного, принципиального и стойкого человека оставил в мире брешь, которую особенно остро ощущают ее друзья и семья  (Юлия Гордон,  ее муж Хэлден и дочь Сонам, которой М.А. была любящей бабушкой).
