How Long Does the Entire Cremation Process Last?

Blog Image

Many people are opting to be cremated as opposed to being buried. Cremations are an environmentally friendly, affordable, and effective method for final disposition.

What to Expect During the Cremation Process Timeline

But how long will it be before I get the cremated remains back again? And how long does the cremation take? In this article, we will discuss some of the essential details of the cremation process.

From the time you give us authorization to care for your loved one, the cremated remains will be returned to you in typically 7 – 10 days. The actual time will depend on when we get a medical certificate of death from the doctor or coroner. We cannot proceed with cremation until we receive this document. Once we do, we can register the death, print death certificates, and issue a disposition permit. This permit authorizes us to proceed with cremation.

The Cremation Process Itself

Selecting a Cremation Container

One of the first things that you need to choose is a cremation container or casket in which we can place your loved one’s body (see https://www.onlycremations.ca/casket-options). This is the vessel which holds the body during the two to three hour cremation process.

The Cremation Chamber

The cremation chamber operates between 870 and 1035 C (1600- 1900 F). Soft tissue and any combustible material, such as clothing and the cremation container, are consumed leaving only elemental bone fragments.

Cooling, Processing, and Placement in Urn

Once completed, the cremated remains are left to cool, gathered, processed, and placed into an urn of your choice (see https://www.onlycremations.ca/urn-options).  The contents when removed from the chamber may contain non-combustible items.  Such foreign material will be removed and disposed of in an approved manner prior to processing. The resulting cremated remains will weigh 6 to 9 lbs (2 to 4 kg).
